What happens when dementia, depressed dipsomania and downright dottiness decide to uproot from the UK and move to France together.
Worried by the lack of care for her frail elderly mother in the UK, Tottie decides a new life elsewhere might be the answer. Sell the Pig is a travel tale with a twist, describing with alternating humour and poignancy how a somewhat dysfunctional family decide to uproot and move to rural France. Eccentric Tottie, her manic depressive alcoholic brother, their mother, whose dementia has given her an obsession with bums, and an equally elderly border collie, decide France's Auvergne is to be their new home. This is the story of what led them to make that journey.
This is a brand new edition with additional previously unseen content.
Sell the Pig a travel tale with a twist The Sell The Pig Series Book 1 eBook Tottie Limejuice
I read all three of the books in this series and this one is the best. The author still has her sense of humor and still believes everything among the members of her dysfunctional family will work out just great. For some reason that still doesn't make sense to me Miss Limejuice decides it would be a good idea to buy a big house in France with her hoarding alcoholic brother and take her very elderly mother there to live with them. Supposedly, her mother will get much better health care there. But, that's because Miss Limejuice plans to live with her mother so that she can supervise her care and do much of the care taking. It seems it would have been a lot easier to stay in England and do the same thing. Of course, there wouldn't have been three books if they had.
This book describes the search for a home in France and the eventual move there with her mother. The mother is an amusing charcter and the brother is kind of tragic. Tottie does her best to care for one and tolerate and mollify the other. Not easy, but she writes with sincerity and has the ability to laugh at herself. Very entertaining.

Sell the Pig a travel tale with a twist The Sell The Pig Series Book 1 eBook Tottie Limejuice Reviews
I used to live in Wilmslow, Cheshire. It appears that Tottie was growing up nearby, in Stockport.
I now live in rural France. So, it appears, does Tottie. And her aged and failing mother. And her dipsomaniac brother. And her crippled, sick and long past bark-by date dog Meic.
The book is about Tottie's childhood, her various moves around the country and different jobs, her somewhat eccentric family and, lately, the problems of coping with a problem brother, a mother sinking into dementia, and a beloved animal who others clearly think should be returned to sender.
Tottie conceives of a solution to all the above troubles. This is not a fix which would occur to everyone. Buy a house in a remote part of France - or rather, get the brother to buy one. Then transport, in a less than new motorcaravan, the mother and the brother and the dog, accompanied by a nurse and a carer, to the new pink home.
The book finishes at the culmination of this plan, that is, at the very moment when the campervan and its unlikely load arrive at the pink house.
Of course we are left wanting more, and hopefully Tottie will reveal it in due course.
The book is well written and, although the author informs us at the start that it will not be funny, it is amusing. There are no outright belly laughs but Tottie (not her real name - the reason for this nom de plume is revealed in the book) has a very droll turn of phrase.
The book could do with a bit of professional attention in terms of layout - there are blank pages scattered througout, and too large gaps between paragraphs, but is blessedly error, spelling and typo free.
I would have preferred the author use more nickname-ish chapter titles like "Meic", a pseudo-Welch fun name for her collie Mikey, instead of the Who, Why, When, Where and How titles that she chose, but this in no way detracts from the quality of her writing or the poignancy of her tale. From start to finish, the story-line keeps the reader engaged and eager to find out what comes next. The characters loom as large as real life because that is what they are; this is a refreshingly honest read.
"Sell the Pig" shows us that life across the pond in England is not much different from life in the US, as far as the quality of healthcare for the aged is concerned. Watching a Brit pick up lock, stock and barrel and move to the land of hairy armpits (as France is wrongly perceived by a great many Americans) in search of better health care and probably a more humane existence generally, should be quite an eye-opener to readers here in the US! The take away for me is that the French seem to love life and those still living it, including their pets, in ways that differ significantly from how they are loved in merry old England, or in the good old USA. As an example, in the US, if you're not willing to sit outside, don't bother taking your pet to dinner; in France most restaurants allow pets inside.
You have to admire someone that would go to such lengths, undertake serious challenges, and risk it all in a bit of a gamble on a better quality of life for her dear mother, aged 90+, in a foreign country. Since everything she reveals in this story is true, one can only hope that she survives and prospers 1000 miles from home--both culturally and geographically speaking. Kudos, Tottie, for having a big heart and a persevering spirit!
Such an interesting story. So many hurdles, so many discouragements, but finally, through strong will and determination,Tottie perseveres. She manages to move her ill and aging mother and bi-polar, alcoholic brother from England and Wales to a beautiful countryside in France. My heart ached for her during some of the trials she suffered, but then I laughed as she turned trials into humor and proceeded to 'sell the pig' and get 'er done. (You must read the book to understand the phrase.) Well written, never a dull moment. Can hardly wait to finish the series and read any new books Tottie writes, she's delightful!
If you have ever had a book that you just don't want to put down then the title makes sense to you. You don't have to be British or a Francophile or even a member of a dysfunctional family (though it might not hurt) to appreciate this funny, sensitive, troubling beautifully written story about a family's decision to uproot home and hearth and move from the UK to France.
Beware though this is not just a story of a family of ex-pats changing one known way of life for the un-known. It is rather an in-depth look at the struggle to improve life for three very different adults and an amazing old dog.
Lucky for me I know the sequel is already written and waiting for me so I won't have to agonize waiting to find out how they adjust to the changes.
